"Is the world in which my daughter grew up any more dangerous, or frightening, than the one in
which I spent my childhood? I think not. I think that the brazen scope of the 9/11 attacks provoked
a cultural amnesia. "State apparatus responded with an array of security measures, border controls, and fundamental changes to the laws that govern our courts and our criminal justice system. "Before, people might have decried those assaults on our civil liberties, [but] they acquiesced . . . , passively surrendering the freedom and privacy rights their grandparents and great-grandparents held precious. "We have allowed our fundamental civil liberties . . . to be gradually eroded, [and] we have become a surveillance culture. . . . If our culture hadn't first undergone a quiet but profound shift in the way people think . . . that couldn't have happened. "We have all colluded in a cultural conspiracy, to sacrifice our traditional independence, autonomy, and simple right to be unobserved, [so that] today we all live in a virtual . . . prison we've chosen to construct and enter of our own volition." |
