A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standardfor Electromagnetic Fields

          Bioelectromagnetics Society committee of medical doctors and health scientists from the USA and around the world says wireless devices, broadcast facilities, powerlines create "a plausible biological mechanism for cancer".

          We cannot afford 'business as usual' any longer. Electromagnetic radiation and fields from wired and wireless technologies are one of the most pervasive environmental exposures in industrialized countries today. Several decades of international scientific research confirms extremely low frequency from electrical and electronic appliances and power lines and radiofrequency radiation from wireless devices such as cellphones and cordless phones, cellular antennas and towers, and broadcast transmission towers are biologically active in animals and humans.
          Human beings are bioelectrical systems. Our hearts and brains are regulated by internal bioelectric signals. The clear consensus of the BioInitiative Working Group is that existing public safety limits are inadequate. It appears it is the information conveyed by electromagnetic radiation (rather than heat) that causes biological change ~ loss of well-being, disease and even death. Effects occur at levels thousands of times below the levels presumed to keep the public safe.
          It is vital that a new basis for exposure standards is found for there may be no limit below which bioeffects and adverse health impacts do not occur. There is evidence of childhood leukemia and other childhood cancers, brain tumors and acoustic neuromas as well as other adult cancers such as breast cancer. There is strong evidence for changes in the nervous system and brain function such as Altzheimer's disease, and prolonged exposures to children could result in diminished capacity for thinking, judgement, memory, learning, and control over behavior. Effects on genes (DNA) and stress proteins, and the immune system are indicated by various symptoms.
          The scientific evidence is sufficient and substantial, and exposures are widespread. No one can avoid it, since even if they live on a mountain-top without electricity there will likely be communication-frequency exposure. We cannot afford 'business as usual' any longer.
