A Rationale for a Biologically-based Public Exposure Standard
for Electromagnetic Fields
Bioelectromagnetics Society committee of medical doctors and health scientists from the USA and
around the world says wireless devices, broadcast facilities, powerlines create "a plausible
biological mechanism for cancer".

We cannot afford 'business as usual' any longer. Electromagnetic radiation and fields from
wired and wireless technologies are one of the most pervasive environmental exposures in
industrialized countries today. Several decades of international scientific research confirms
extremely low frequency from electrical and electronic appliances and power lines and
radiofrequency radiation from wireless devices such as cellphones and cordless phones, cellular
antennas and towers, and broadcast transmission towers are biologically active in animals and
humans.
Human beings are bioelectrical systems. Our hearts and brains are regulated by internal
bioelectric signals. The clear consensus of the BioInitiative Working Group is that existing
public safety limits are inadequate. It appears it is the information conveyed by electromagnetic
radiation (rather than heat) that causes biological change ~ loss of well-being, disease and even
death. Effects occur at levels thousands of times below the levels presumed to keep the public
safe.
It is vital that a new basis for exposure standards is found for there may be no limit below
which bioeffects and adverse health impacts do not occur. There is evidence of childhood leukemia
and other childhood cancers, brain tumors and acoustic neuromas as well as other adult cancers
such as breast cancer. There is strong evidence for changes in the nervous system and brain
function such as Altzheimer's disease, and prolonged exposures to children could result in
diminished capacity for thinking, judgement, memory, learning, and control over behavior. Effects
on genes (DNA) and stress proteins, and the immune system are indicated by various symptoms.
The scientific evidence is sufficient and substantial, and exposures are widespread. No one can
avoid it, since even if they live on a mountain-top without electricity there will likely
be communication-frequency exposure. We cannot afford 'business as usual' any longer.

PLEASE NOTE:
Health Canada's "safety" guidelines on microwaves declare a danger only if the temperature of a
person's skin, or internal organs increases from exposure to the microwaves. However, Health
Canada also acknowledges that "biological effects" can occur even if the skin doesn't get hot.
These biological changes can happen even at very low levels such as those emitted from the school's
WIFI system.
According to the Royal Society of Canada in a Report to HEALTH CANADA, these biological effects
include:
-weakening (compromising) the blood-brain-barrier which is responsible for keeping diseases out
of the brain. A weakenedblood-brain-barrier cannot be repaired. Health Canada acknowledges that
children are more vulnerable to this than adults.
-activate ODC salivary enzymes known to promote cancer in humans
-disrupt calcium regulation
-shows strong evidence that microwave irradiation produces behavioural and associated biochemical
changes
-all of the above changes occur at or below the occupational exposure limits in Canada's Safety
Code 6.
There are currently no guidelines for low-level long-term exposure which is what is happening in
our school.
The current Guidelines are for short term Thermal Exposure only. If the microwave transmitter does
not heat the internal organs of an adult male (180 lbs) in 6 minutes or less, it is considered
safe.
According to the Ontario Ministry of Education's Guide for School Councils (2001 pg.4.4) the SVE
School Parent Council has a responsibility to inform the school community stakeholders of these
proven biological changes that may occur in children so that they can be fully informed of the
potential risks to children being exposed to these microwaves on a daily basis in school.
The LEX report recently done on SVE states that "These exposure limits do not address long-term
exposure to low levels of RF (microwaves)," which is exactly the circumstance under which your
child and all children in the school are being exposed. In other words, the report is incomplete
and intentionally does not advise on levels known to cause biological changes.

We fully support equal access to technology for all children in our schools. The safe way to
connect to the internet is with cables. All Simcoe County schools - and most of the schools in
Canada - already have safe cable access for internet. Since there is abundant evidence that
microwave radiation can cause biological changes and health effects, this is a dangerous choice
for public schools.
Our Advisory Board is comprised of professionals who are also parents. All policies have a single
guiding principle: the healthiest learning environment for our kids.
